Girls with Dreams Tee
In celebration of International Women's Day, 20% of sales with be donated to the Girl Scouts of the USA, a leadership development organization for girls.
As a woman business owner and a former Girl Scout, I love the message on this tee.
I grew up in a small town in Illinois where there wasn’t much to do; no summer camp, not really any after school activities, and obviously no Netflix. So I became a Girl Scout overachiever, this overzealous badge getter. You had to do an activity to get the badge, and write a little essay about it, and then your mom would sign off on it. For the music badge (geek alert), I learned to play reveille on the bugle. Needless to say, I was the toast of the annual jamboree. I cranked out so many badges that after awhile, I didn’t even take the time to sew them onto my sash. Even the badge I got for sewing wasn’t sewn on!
I used to jazz up my uniform by hemming it, hiking it up so it was really short, or wearing it with all sorts of belts. I remember marching in a parade in my uniform. I insisted on wearing these black patent leather party shoes with this little heel that made me feel very princess-y. By block two of the parade, the heel had completely fallen off, so I had to limp through the rest of the parade. My parents saw me limping with this nail sticking out of the heel of my shoe, but I waved and was like, lookin’ good!
When it came to selling cookies, oh my God, I was maniacal. Normally we got clipboards and our little forms with pictures of the cookies and we were supposed to go door-to-door and present ourselves in our uniforms. I remember thinking, it’ll take a lot of time if I go to each person’s house and wait for them to answer the door, and even then they might not be home. Where can I go and just capture the sales? So I got a card table and set up a little shop, like a little pop-up shop, outside the Jewel grocery store so nobody got in or out without me asking if they wanted to buy cookies. I got tons of orders - tons! I was a Girl Scout for an embarrassingly long time - I was super into it.
That Girl Scout structure probably built a lot of my business acumen. I didn’t start out with this far-reaching goal of riding in limos with supermodels. I always just thought about one goal at a time.
They say you are who you are from birth, but I don’t think I would be who I am today without early mentorship and support from smart, strong women who taught me to think creatively, to never take no for an answer, and to always dream big.
